십자가에 원수가 되게 하는 것은 그 목적에 우리 자신을 어긋나게 하는 것이다 자기 의( 의롭다함을 받기 위해 십자가를 바라보는 대신), 자기 방종( 십자가를 지고 그리스도를 따르는 대신), 자기 선전( 십자자에 못박히신 그리스도를 전하는 대신), 자기 영광(십자가안에 있는 영광대신) 이들이 바로 그리스도의 십자가의 원수가 되도록 우리를 만드는 일그러진 것들이다- 존 스토트 To be an enemy of the cross is to set ourselves against its purposes.  Self-righteousness (instead of looking to the cross for justification), self-indulgence (instead of taking up the cross to follow Christ), self-advertisement (instead of preaching Christ crucified) and self-glorification (instead of glorying in the cross) - these are the distortions which make us 'enemies' of Christ's cross. - John Stott
